Wedding in Yangon!

I went to Yangon, Myanmar (used to be called Burma) with Le bf in 2012 to attend our classmate, Le Yee's wedding. She is from Myanmar and she came to Singapore to study. Now she's moved back home and is doing business with her husband.

The trip was way back from 30 June - 03 July 2012! Heh!

In case you don't know, Brendan and I met in SIM while we were studying for Diploma in Management Studies. It is a useless diploma designed to cheat people's money IMHO.. but the good thing that came out of it is I met my future husband there! :D

I still have A LOT of backlogged travel blog entries. Unlike many other people who are super excited to blog about their holiday trips, sometimes dragging out a few entries for a short holiday, I am super lazy to blog about my holiday trips. I don't know why, I just am. I blog about mundane stuff but not the interesting travel posts... Maybe I am just unwilling to do so cos I don't want to relive the whole holiday and feel sad cos I am in Singapore and not out there somewhere? Haha!

****************

We flew on Myanmar Airways cos the timing for Silkair was quite weird last year. Now there's more choices for flights to Yangon cos the country has "opened up" to the outside world. Lots of things has changed in the past year.

Arrived at the airport and there were two distinct queues for foreigners and locals. Guess which queue is longer? The local queue was CRAZY LONG! The foreigner queue had a grand total of 5 people including Le bf and me. 5!!!! The local queue was so long it stretched from the escalator to the immigration counter (quite a long stretch), but there were 2 officers serving 5 foreigners. Kua kua kua.

But anyway, before we flew there we had to go apply for a visa. I can't remember how much we paid.. I think it was around SGD60 per person. We had to go to a dodgy travel agency in Peninsula Plaza to do the visa application. I was so afraid they will close down and run away with our passports... LOL! Now you can do arrival visa if you fly there, an option that was not available last year. (See how backdated this is? Haha!)

Le Yee's friend came to the airport to pick us up! She was holding a small hand written sign with our names but we couldn't see her cos the airport was packed! Luckily we managed to call Le Yee and she asked her to go meet us at the main entrance.

The taxis are super duper dodgy to the max in Yangon. Like seriously dodgy!! Thank God we were ferried in an Alphard on the first day and most of our stay. We had to take the cab a few times when Le Yee was busy and I was so traumatized.

I forgot why Le bf looks grumpy here. Haha!

I think it's wonderful to have friends all over the world....! When we flew there to visit, we get to experience the place as a local with the option to do touristy stuff if we want to. Go to nice yummy places and most importantly feel safe because we have a local bringing us around. ^_^ So far we have Le Yee in Yangon, William in Penang and Tabby in Perth. Le bf has friends and clients in other parts of the world so we can explore them next time!!

Local currency

The exchange rate is super erratic, but it's around SGD1 = 700MMK. You get 700 kyats for every 1 Singapore dollar, subject to fluctuations. It's like playing with paper money cos the value is so small.. We brought USD there and changed USD50 into kyats so we can use that for taxis or small purchases if needed.

After 20mins drive, we arrived at our hotel. Le Yee got married at Sedona Hotel so that's where we stayed for 3 nights. You won't believe how expensive the hotels are in Myanmar.. the cheap ones are so fucking dodgy.. a seasoned backpaper will think twice about staying there. There are very few luxury five stars hotels there as the country was "closed up" and not much tourists visit. There are many luxury hotel chains that began building their hotels while we were there.. I think they should be completed by now.. So you will have more choices now. Hopefully the rates went down due to competition.

Our 3 nights stay came up to USD700++ and that was after I got a discount as a travel agent staff! That's almost SGD300 per night! It is more than a normal person's one month salary!! And it's a super plain and simple hotel, though by local standards it's considered ultra luxurious.

We got a corner unit, so it was larger than the normal rooms. :)

Everytime we travel, the moment we put down our luggage, Le bf will start unpacking his techie stuff. He will lay out the wires, chargers, set up the wireless router thingy so we can have a few device tapping into the wifi network.. At the end of the trip he will also pack all the techie stuff up nicely. I love it cos I usually just dump the wires in a bag and have a hard time trying to access the wifi network and stuff.. Now all I need to do is wait for a few minutes and everything is up and running! :)

Complimentary flowers and fruits to welcome us!

Amenities in the bathroom..

Picture time while waiting for the car.
The bride, Le Yee is the girl in the middle.

She brought us to the food street and kept buying food for us. Non stop. Buy and buy and buy and buy, and afterwards brought us to have Prata for dinner!! She stopped at almost every stall to buy a small packet to pass around so we can share and have a taste of local food. The food is similar to Thailand's.. There's also Satay, sweet cakes, fried stuff, etc.

There was a total of 8 of us that night.. all of them are our SIM classmates. Actually they are Le bf's friends cos I was a loner back in school. Long story. Haha!

After the sinful but yummy dinner & snacking, she brought us to "the only tourist attraction in Yangon". Well, I believe there should be more attractions now.. but last year we really didn't have much choices.

This is the entrance to the famous Pagoda!

Le Yee said the country's wealth is displayed publicly for all to see at the Pagoda.. all the jewels, gold, diamonds, precious stones are stored here.. and the tip of the Pagoda is a large diamond or something.

We had to remove our shoes to go in.. Since it's troublesome to carry and we can't leave it outside in case someone steals them, we left our shoes in the car.

We walked one round around the Pagoda.. the compound is HUGE!

It's a pretty place to take pictures at night cos the lighting is very good. :)

Gong Gong.. So that's Day 1 of our trip in Yangon!

Actually, Le Yee's wedding was split into 2 days. The first day was on 30th June for business clients, government officials (her dad is a government officer) and second day on 31st June for her friends and relatives.. Due to miscommunication cos Le bf can be so blur sometimes, he thought it was wedding dinner for 2 days but it's actually wedding breakfast! Yes, the event was from 9am-11am and we flew in on the first day thinking it was dinner but ended up missing it cos we arrived too late. So we only attended the 2nd day's wedding.. which was a waste because the 1st day was the traditional one and the 2nd day was the more modern one. Le bf kept apologizing about his boo-boo... silly boy.

On the 2nd day, we woke up really early to see the wedding preparations! It's like some drama production cos there were teams of hair stylists, makeup artists and SO MANY PEOPLE around!

The theme is silver! Previous day was gold (too bad we missed it!).  Since it's a morning wedding ceremony, we had plenty of time to explore the city before the small family dinner with the bride and groom at night.

Chio hair must take selfie!

Nothing much at the malls and markets.. I mean, we have everything and more in Singapore. Myanmar is just starting to open up to the world so there's a lot of things that are not available there. Lay Yee told us that only recently did they had Coca Cola in the country and people went crazy over it. There's no fast food like Mcdonalds or big international hotel chains, but I guess that will all change really soon cos a lot of businesses will be rushing to invest and set up shop there now.

The dinner was awesome! We went to this seafood restaurant and had local cuisine. I really don't know the name of all the dishes, heck I didn't know what some of them were.. Hahahaha! Le bf was the adventurous one trying everything.

Next day we went for breakfast at a local cafe! There have wifi! WOOO!

10,000 Kyats is approximately SGD10.00
Lay Yee said it's big money there.

Then the 3 of us went to a cafe for coffee! The rest of the Singaporeans left cos they stayed for 2 nights (the correct 2 nights to attend both weddings. LE BF SOTONG!). Lay Yee's husband was busy so she brought us around. We sat for hours at this quaint cafe cos she wants to know all about our love story. Hahahahaha! She is curious how we became a couple since we were all classmates.

Afterwards we went to this local eatery for more local food! It looks so pretty and some of the items were really foreign to me.. Really good experience and I am glad to have the chance to catch up with Lay Yee cos I was a loner in school last time. Le bf was the one with all the friends. Hahahaha.

Ordered room service for dinner cos we didn't dare to wander around outside by ourselves.

The airport is newly renovated and it's really pretty. Not much shops and restaurants around but I guess that will change in a few years time.. Haha!

Everyone has to fill up a departure card

By the way, Singaporeans need a visa to visit Myanmar. We had to apply a few weeks before departure. They will paste a sticker in your passport. Now you can do a visa on arrival so it's not so troublesome.

My Ferragamo Bridal Shoes!

I am in Perth now and I just bought a new pair of shoes to use as my bridal shoes for the wedding!

Absolutely gorgeous!!

Actually, I went down to David Jones (the only place in Perth which carries Ferragamo products) yesterday to have a look but did not buy it.. I was undecided if I should get it because it's really expensive and I want to sleep on it before making the commitment.

I seldom wear heels cos I am tall, and flats are more comfortable anyway... So I will most probably only wear it for my wedding and really special occasions.

Last July when I came to Perth, I tried the shoes with Tabby and she kept psycho-ing me to buy them cos I really like them but I didn't have a special occassion to wear them.. but this time I have a good reason! I AM GETTING MARRIED! Wahahahahaha! If getting married is not a good enough reason, I don't know what is. LOL!

So today I went back to try it again and decided to buy it!

Happy me in David Jones! :)

The price is around the same price as Singapore but the most important thing is they have my size! Singapore only carries up to size 8 and I wear size 10!

Also, Ferragamo sizes has different width. B, C, D.. Most of the shoes in Singapore are B which are the slim cut. The best for me would be D but it's mainly sold in Europe. Perth carries the C range and it's good enough for me.. just need to widen it a bit by walking around the house. The salesgirl advised me to wear a thick pair of socks and walk around the house in it to break into the shoes.

Well, I was in Las Vegas in January with Le bf and I went to the Ferragamo boutique at Caesars Palace to hunt for the heels I like cos it's cheaper in USA compared to Perth and Singapore but they only carry the size up to 9! We went to the factory outlet mall and the Ferragamo shoes there were MAD CHEAP (like 70% off) but there's no size! Only weird sizes like 4 or maximum up to size 8!! I was sitting in the shop trying not to cry cos there's so many nice shoes there that I like but there's no size! Over dramatic a bit.. but if you can imagine the scene, surrounded by pretty shoes at good discounts and you have the money to buy them but there's NONE in your size...... Any girl would have burst into tears! The most frustrating thing part was, it is really easy to find size 10 in USA! I managed to buy lots of shoes from NineWest, Clarks, Keds..  but not Ferragamo!!!! There were shoes in my size from Kate Spade, Madden, etc, but I didn't like the designs. Sat in the shop for 30mins just emo-ing until Le bf pulled me out.. Haha! I made him promise to bring me to Italy one day so I can buy all the Ferragamo I like!! ^_^

I also like Christian Louboutin shoes a lot, but they are crazy expensive.. almost double the price of a Ferragamo but less comfortable (IMHO).. I've already been to Paris twice but have not bought a pair of Louboutin or a pair of Chanel earrings.. slap me please. One day I am going back to Europe again for a shopping trip.. one day. *grim determination*

Anyways, back to the topic.. So, since they have my size in Perth (they carry up to size 11!!), I decided to buy it and bring it back to Singapore. Moreover I will get a 9% tax rebate. The shoes still cost a substantial amount after the tax rebate but I shall just treat it as a wedding gift to myself. ^_^

I told Le bf about it and he said I should get it if I like it.. but I don't dare to tell him how much it costs cos he will faint. Well, actually I did message him the amount on Whatsapp but he didn't notice and I'm not gonna tell him.. Haha!!!

Can't wait to bring these along when I try my bridal gowns! :)

Annoying Know-it-alls who know nothing at all

There's so much things to do for the wedding and we just barely scratched the surface. To make things easier, I can hire a wedding planner but I don't know how I can relinquish control of the planning of my wedding to someone I don't know.

Well, if we had an unlimited budget I may consider because it's really stressful to plan for a wedding while working full time but a wedding planner charge between SGD4000-SGD10000 for conceptualizing and actual day coordination. That is crazy expensive..

Since we have confirmed the venue & dates, we can start shortlisting and confirming the other stuff.. Things like; wedding band, makeup artist, photographer, videographer, florist, bridal gown, groom suit, bridesmaid dresses and a million other nitty gritty stuff.

I have spent hundreds of hours just pouring through websites, pricelists, portfolios, photographs, etc and these assholes just come along and make a stupid snide remark like "Haven't you heard of XYZ brand? You should buy the bridesmaids dresses from them what!". Like duh? I have contacted XYZ and they don't have the sizes! Or telling me "Why don't you book from ABC Hotel? My cousin got married there!". Duh? I have just told them barely a few seconds ago that I have contacted ALL the 5 star hotels (except Sentosa) and they don't have the fucking date I want! Were they even listening?! We need a weekend dinner and those hotels only have weekdays dinner and weekend lunch! Don't tell me what I should or should not do when you yourself don't even have the updated information!

Wedding stuff are so freaking expensive and overpriced! I get fucking annoyed when people say "It's once in a lifetime! Just splurge lah!".

I agree a wedding is once in a lifetime but that doesn't mean we should pay through our noses for something that's more expensive because it's labelled with the word "wedding". And the money is from our pocket, not our parents. People assume that our parents are paying for the wedding but they are not! Moreover, the money is also not from those fucktards' pockets so they have no right to tell us to just pay any amount that the vendors are asking.

$500 per hour for a photographer, $2000 for basic flower decorations, $300 for a bridal bouquet, $5000 for a rental bridal package.. What?!?!

Let's see if they will say the same fucking thing when it's their turn to get married. If they dare to complain things are expensive, I'll raise my eyebrows at them and remind them "Oh? Remember someone said it's once in a lifetime so just splurge? Why penny pinching now huh bitch? Not so easy when it's your own hard-earned money huh? huh huh huh?!?!"

Yea childish, whatever. So pissed off!! The annoying thing is most of them are not even married or planning to get married! They don't even know what they are talking about yet acting all smug and knowledgeable! Seriously?!

Alright.. happy thoughts, happy thoughts.

I am getting so stressed up easily because of this wedding planning stuff.. I might probably turn into a Bridezilla or something. Urgh.

Thank God Le Bf is so sweet, patient and understanding.. no matter how grouchy or grumpy I get when people or things pissed me off. He's a calming presence that I can't live without.. :)

Our wedding announcement

I know I've been neglecting my blog.. My entries are spaced further and further apart. I've been so busy with work and trying hard to catch up on my sleep or spending time with Le bf and his family during my off time that I don't have time to blog, but I am very active on Twitter still! :)

Well.. in case you don't follow me on Twitter, I have a big announcement to make!

❤ WE ARE GETTING MARRIED! ❤

Is this news big enough to make up for not blogging for more than 1 month?

When I say married, it's the full wedding with solemnization, church wedding and dinner banquet! The date is set in September this year and I will only reveal the actual date and send out the official "Save the Date" notices when I've paid all the deposit for the venues.

I am so happy and excited, I'm still feeling the high even though it's been 2 weeks since we officially started planning for our wedding!

We have informed our close friends about our decision to get married and 90% of the reaction is "WAH! WHY SO FAST!?".

Seriously? Before we decided to get married, each and everyone of you have been pestering us to get married and even kept pushing us for a date yet now you are asking us why so fast? Only a few like Tabby and my sister are super happy without the "Why so fast" question.

I've done a lot these 2 weeks. Initially I wanted to hire a wedding planner but in the end I decided to do everything by myself cos I am a control freak. Nathaniel called me a Bridezilla.. I beg to differ. I am just a very efficient and organized Bride-to-be.. it's difficult liaising with vendors and working my fucked-up night shift timing, but I am trying my best to do it.

What I've done so far:
  1. Sourced for venues and confirmed the dates for
    • Church Wedding & Solemnization (Paying deposit soon)
    • Dinner Banquet at a hotel (Signing contract soon)
  2. Confirmed and finalized my Bridal Party (7 bridesmaids + 1 attendant)
  3. Researched and shortlisted photographer, videographer & makeup artists
  4. Researched and shortlisted Bridesmaid dresses & Bridal gowns
  5. Confirmed and paid for Dessert Buffet Table for the Church wedding
  6. Researched for photobooth
And many many more... more than I can remember now...

I printed out ALL the banquet prices for Singapore hotels and actually bind them into 2 books. I also emailed ALL the hotels in Singapore asking for weekend dinner availability. (Mama Chew doesn't want Sentosa hotels, so I didn't bother finding out from those).

Most people book their wedding dinner 1 year in advance so I am being very ambitious to try to find a date in 6 months time.. but I managed to find it! Yay me! Initially I got 12-Oct-2013 for Mandarin Oriental, but Yaya & Joyce insisted that it's an inauspicious date to marry and tried very hard to dissuade me.. Both Brendan & I are not pantang (superstitious), but in the end I chose September because of the package and date offered by the other hotel.

As for the "Why so fast question", this is a very complicated question to answer (which I will try to explain below), but the simple answer will be..

In December, we tried to apply for our 1st BTO with HDB at Toa Payoh. Failed miserably.. our queue number was 1500++ and there were only like 300 units. In February we tried for Tampines BTO but also failed.. this time not that bad, but our queue number was still doubled that what was offered. We are not bidding for the latest BTO cos the locations are Punggol, Sengkang & Bukit Batok. We want somewhere in the East side, nearer to his parents.

Our main purpose to apply for the BTO is for investment purposes because we planned to live with his parents after we get married. We don't need the house to live in and we can just leave it till it's time to sell it since property prices kept jumping every year.

Back in late January, I had the sudden thought to go overseas to further my studies. I was disillusioned and jaded about my prospects in Singapore. Our government kept introducing policies that are not very assuring for local born Singaporeans. I am being paid above my pay grade now and if I lose my job, it will be very difficult for me to find a similar job that can pay me what I am getting now.. though I am also feeling disgruntled at work because the new hires are receiving a higher basic pay than me even though I am here for 1.5yrs and I have to mentor them! On top of everything, my rental is just killing me! At SGD1500 a month, it's more than half of my take home pay and it's really downright ridiculous that I am paying so much money for a room to stay. As of this month, I've already paid SGD18000 for my rental. That's the basic gross annual salary of many Singaporeans.. and I'm just throwing that money away for a place to sleep.

If you want to preach about how I can find another cheaper place, blah blah blah.. save the effort and go do your own research on the prices of housing rent in Singapore. It has increased so much, I doubt I can find the same kind of accommodation at SGD1500 now.

So, all the factors combine together made me consider about going overseas to further my studies. Yes, it will not be easy because I am giving up my income, I am leaving Le bf in Singapore, I am going back to full time study after a long hiatus from studying.. But I was determined to make it work. For my future, for our future (with Le bf) cos we can have an option to migrate to another country.

I discussed with Le bf extensively about my plans and he was very supportive though he couldn't bear to be apart from me for a few years. He even offered to be my guarantor for my study loans and brainstormed for days on how he can extend his business into Australia so he can always travel there to be with me (but it's difficult cos his business dealings is usually with China and USA).

I told Tabby about my idea and she suggested that I go to Perth to further my studies. She very generously invited me to stay at her house for the duration of my study for free and help me in anyway I can. I really don't know how to express my gratitude for having such a wonderful friend who don't hesitate to help me even though she will be inconvenienced.

As advised by Tabby, I researched on the schools and courses I want to take, I went to IDP and submitted all my documents, found out on how I can bring Chloe over with me when I go there. Made a list of what I should do, which banks I should go to for loans.. etc.

Le bf told Papa Chew about my plans and he was taken aback because Le bf threw a bomb at him by saying "Maybe I'll migrate to Australia with Jasmine". Like seriously! I didn't know he was gonna say that but Papa Chew nearly fainted (I think), cos he is the only son, the eldest child, the eldest grandchild and he's telling Papa Chew that he's leaving Singapore for good to go overseas.

We spoke with Mama Chew together and she was trying her best to discourage me because she felt that a long distance relationship is very tough and may not work out. Also, she's worried about my career prospects as the economy is very erratic now and I may or may not be able to get a well paying job to pay back my study loans, worse still I may not get a job in Perth and have to come back to Singapore to work for a lower salary than what I have now and end up being worse off. Time wasted, money wasted and putting our relationship at risk.

However, Le bf and Tabby were very supportive of my decision and they did everything they could to help me. They encouraged me, did research for me and also urged me to do what I want to do.

Le bf and I discussed about getting married before I go for my studies. Just a simple ROM solemnization ceremony... But we gave up on that idea because it kinda defeats the purpose. We don't want to get married for any other reason except wanting to be wed to each other because we want to, not because we have to.

Many people get married for all the wrong reasons nowadays. Unplanned pregnancy, to buy a house, to move out from their parents' house, insecurity, etc. We don't want to be like them.

So we also signed up for a marriage course at our church. It is not compulsory but necessary if we want a pastor from our church to marry us. It is also a good way for us to understand each other better cos we both know being in a relationship is different from being in a marriage. Priorities and responsibilities are very different and we want to make sure we are both sure about what we want in a marriage. There were a few assessment tests we had to take and we are both surprised and glad that our affirmations and ideas of a marriage are very similar. There are further assessments we need to take and that will be in a few weeks time when our pastor meets up with us to go through the homework that we have to do. The homework is.. crazy hard. I told Le bf that those few pages left me mind-fucked cos the questions asked are so though-provoking..

Meanwhile, time goes by and I did not receive any news from IDP even though I was promised a reply (either rejection or approval) by end February. Tabby regularly text me to ask about the outcome and I always tell her "No reply yet..", which is true. She is so excited for me to go over to be with her and I feel so loved and blessed.

Le bf did not ask me about me about the outcome. I don't know the real reason because I did not ask him, but I guess he is secretly glad I did not receive any news...

But guess what? After we made the decision to get married this year and to abandon my plans to head overseas, I just received an acceptance letter from one of the Unis in Perth 2 days ago! I decided to ignore the letter because after all the waiting & discussion, I decided my heart and place belongs here in Singapore with him.

I am working in the night shift and both my timings and Le bf's clashed. I remembered one week where we did not meet for 6 days and we both missed each other like crazy. Being physically apart in Singapore is already so unbearable when we can meet up easily with just a maximum of 45mins drive away, imagine being away from each other.. in different continents (literally), 5hrs10mins by flight to see each other? It was after that week that we both realized that long distance relationship is never gonna work for us. It's not that we are insecure or clingy, we just can't stand being apart.

Le bf did not propose to me.. well, not yet. He is going to plan something and he needs to do something cos the first question / or second question after the "Why so fast?" question is "HOW YOU PROPOSE?!?!".. He need to think of something before we announce our wedding to the world cos everyone is gonna ask him. Hahahaha!

We told Papa & Mama Chew about our decision to ROM first then marry 1 or 2 years later.. they insisted that ROM is not considered marriage and we should just do everything together.. So that's how our plans for an ROM turned into a full fledged wedding.

And how did we end up deciding about going for ROM? I really don't know. I guess it's just a combination of all the factors above plus the fact that we love each other a lot and we know we are the one for each other. Marry now, marry next year, marry next decade.. it'll still be the same outcome.. we will still be together forever.

It may sound cliche or mushy, but Le bf completes me and makes my life complete. I know he feels the same way too. His presence calms me and makes me happy. We can be with each other in the same room doing our own stuff but we are happy because we can see and feel the other person's proximity. When I am in his arms, the whole world just disappears and I forget about all my unhappiness & worries I have.

I cannot imagine my life without him and it actually scares me that I am actually dependent on a person cos I've been independent for the most part of my life and my past relationships are nothing like what I have with Le bf. I actually worry when he is not beside me.. worry if he has eaten, worry that he will hurt himself, worry that he is stressed out from work.

My life used to be just me & Chloe. Imagine a bubble of protection.. inside is me and Chloe and no one else. Chloe loves me unconditionally and will never hurt me so she has been there since Day 1.

If you know me and my previous relationships, I never let any of them into the Bubble because I don't trust any of them. If they do things and say things to hurt me whilst outside the Bubble, imagine what kind of damage they can inflict on me when they are inside?!

It took me some time before I let Le bf completely into the Bubble... And now that he's in it, he actually strengthens my Bubble and made me stronger. :)

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

New International Version (NIV)
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

If you understand what the bible says about love in Corinthians 13:4-8, good for you! Because you are in a beautiful relationship that's blessed by God. If you don't... well, I hope you will experience it one day. I waited all my life for someone like Le bf, and it's worth the wait and all the heartaches I went through.

I never believe in marriages because I've never met the right one before. Now I can't wait for our forever to start.

I will try to update more about my wedding planning soon. This entry has taken up a lot of my mental and emotional energy.. Good night!
